Team Survivor: An Introduction
The Scranton Running Company is pleased to introduce our Team Survivor, an incredible group of women with whom we couldn't be happier nor more privileged to know. Each is a breast cancer survivor. Their goals are varied, but the target is the same: Scranton's Race for the Cure on September 11.
Surviving cancer hasn't defined who these women are, but it certainly has contributed a great deal to their current makeup. When we sat down with these women at the outset of this program in mid-July, in many cases goals were hesitantly stated but there was a common theme: they knew they needed to improve their physical condition and commit to a fitness program.
Some of our Pink Ladies just wanted to walk the entire race. Some wanted to run a mile or two of it. Others were simply looking for an excuse to start working out again. The intent was for them to meet once per week with us on Scranton's new Rivertrail for a group workout. This evolved into 3 workouts per week with their coach and inspirational leader, SRCo's RJ Stiltenpole. More than a month into the endeavor, most are running up to two miles at a time. The progress has wildly exceeded anyone's expectations. These women have shown all the while a giddy grit, which has been infectious.
Some of them will be sharing their experiences here, so check back frequently for their inspirational stories along the way to Sep 11.

I am a 32 year old breast cancer survivor and mother of three. I was misdiagnosised in August of 2007 when I went to my yearly gyno appointment. I found a lump that felt like a watermelon seed. My female gynecologist from Scranton felt it and was not concerned, in fact she said it was my menstrual cycle not to worry. She told me women my age (which was 29) are lumpy during their cycle. She said not to worry until I was 35 or more. So believing there was nothing to worry about, I went on with my busy mommy life. Months later around Christmas break I felt my lump which grew to the size of a peach pit. (2.9cm) I went for a second opinion and the nurse practitioner urged me to get an ultrasound stat! Besides the stress and depression, 7 surgeries, and four rounds of chemo, I survived! I am a stronger and more determined woman than I was before my cancer. I volunteer with various benefits and fundraisers to help people. I try to spread awareness anyway I can, even if it's at the grocery store. I try to remind people to know their own bodies, no doctor knows it like you do. When I was asked to be a part of Team Survivor, I accepted with great excitement! I never thought it was going to be as wonderful as it turned out to be! I only ran a mile in track and gym in high school 14 years ago. I am happy to say I can do the race with my eyes closed thanks to SRCo's. It is a great honor to be trained by Scranton's Finest. Matt, Matt, Rj, and Megan you are such an inspiration to us. Thank you for giving us survivors this opportunity. We have such a great support group. It's nice to talk about our situations with each other, they never get tired of talking. And their ears are always listening. I love spending time talking with each one of our team members. We kind of jump around as we are walking, the time fly's by too fast. I can only hope that we can continue our Team even after the race is done. This was a genius idea, we are benefitting so much from this experience. Your belief in us girls and continuous encouragement made us stronger and faster than we ever imagined. I am enjoying challenging myself and my body each time i put on my pink "New Balance" sneakers!!! They symbolize a new beginning on my health. Thank you from the bottom of my heart &"soles"! I wish you all great success on your store, you please know that i am very grateful for all you have done for me and my new survivor friends!! Barb:)
